As a busy mom with 2 young children, the idea of a "vacation" has changed drastically for us in the last 8 years. Years ago, when we went on vacation, the goal for my husband and I was to be able to have some relaxation time - time to unwind and reconnect as a couple. We have fond memories of those pre-child trips when we could spend a lazy day at the pool or seaside with a tropical drink in hand. Later on we may go hiking to some beautiful waterfall up in the mountains and then dinner in a small bistro over looking the city.
When our children were toddlers, and we decided that the kids were old enough to take them on a family vacation, reality shook us by the shoulders. There would be no sitting peacefully around the pool or ocean with a tropical drink in hand. We were out there splashing around with our kids, playing Marco-Polo. We tried the nature hike into the rain forest. It was beautiful, but we only made it 10 minutes in when the kids legs were tired and they wanted a snack. For dinner, we didn't even entertain the thought of going to the quaint little French restaurant at the resort. Instead we opted for the $12. mini sandwiches in the gift shop, and brought them up to the room. By the end of the vacation, though we did have fun playing with the kids, we were exhausted and couldn't wait to get back home.
As the years went on, I started doing more research before going on vacation. We love spending time with our children doing fun family activities, but for us, it is also important to be able to relax and have a break while on vacation. So I was pretty excited to find that there are vacations available that include both worlds. Resorts and cruises that cater to the little ones with kids clubs where they can have their own dance parties, attend circus school, do science experiments, and then have the option of staying for dinner and a movie. My husband and I could have own free time, while our kids were having the time of their lives. On other days, we would pick a family activity that was suitable for their age, and fun for us too. It was the best of both worlds!
